You can absolutely play the first one on any console but KOTOR II pretty much has to be played with mods.
Also I would recommend – if you can – to install cosmetic mods for KotOR. Play KotOR and only after that KotORoration mod. Yes, it worth it and do not listen to those munchkins.
If the mod is a Loose File mod, it can be copied directly into the Overrides folder from the download location. Download the mod from a reputable modder. Navigate to the Overrides folder in the swkotor folder. Navigate to the folder containing the game files.
